FreeSRS is an open source Python library which can calculate the free vibration response (SRS) to shock loading at the input-traversed trajectories.
FreeSRS aims to provide a flexible and extensible means for the calculation of the SRS through arbitrary loading methods. The flexibility and extensibility are achieved through configuring the SRS by a just defined input/output geometry of the shock loading which specifies the configuration of the structure in terms of boundary conditions, loadings, and boundary and mass information.
FreeSRS is built in a framework of two python modules that are – “freesrs” and “freesrs.pyx”. The “freesrs” module deals with some basic functionality of the SRS, while “freesrs.pyx” module deals with the SRS and is the working core of FreeSRS.
The following subsections will first introduce the concepts of the SRS, Shock loading, and Shock direction followed by a step-by-step explanation of the functions implemented within the “freesrs.pyx” module.

SRS and Shock Loading:

SRS stands for Shock Response Spectrum. Its also known as the first order response. The main objective of the SRS is to take the vibration response of a system at a certain frequency of vibration, and use it to approximate the vibration response of the system at other frequencies. The approximation is based on the fact that in real world structures, the same structural response can be obtained at different frequencies of vibration by applying different loadings. Thus the SRS provide a close approximation to the complete vibration response.
For the purpose of calculating the SRS we consider the structure in equilibrium.

Shock loading is the application of an impulse excitation to an object. Shock Loadings includes a very narrow or narrow band signal along with the initial impulse. The narrow band signal is essential for the normalization of the SRS. The normalization is an essential step as the frequency content of the impulse excitation and the bandwidth of the SRS are different.

Example:

Say the SRS of a system is calculated at natural frequency at 1Hz, 8Hz, 16Hz and 32Hz. The impulse response for the above calculated frequencies will be of different scale, say for 1Hz it will be a peak of 1kgs, for 8Hz it will be 1kgs, for 16Hz it will be 2kgs and for 32Hz it will be 3kgs.

The FreeSRS toolbox is available for free use by the academic community and can be downloaded on GitHub.
The toolbox is quite easy to learn but the best way to get started is to make a look at the examples that help you understand the toolbox.
An introduction can be found in the README-example.
In this documentation, you will learn how to use the FreeSRS toolbox and how to estimate the dynamic vibration spectrum.
The dynamic vibration spectrum is often used to analyze signals that have been recorded from a dynamic structure.
To estimate the dynamic vibration spectrum, you need to define a region where the target signal can be expected (the aperture).
The initial signal will be multiplied with a filter before it can be multiplied with a broadband white noise (which is the input to the FreeSRS toolbox) and the result will be saved as a spectrogram.
In order to add a reference to the results, the spectrum will be averaged.
The average spectrum is then divided by the reference and the result can be saved as a file.
This file is then analyzed with the FreeSRS toolbox.
The reference is given as an average noise spectrum.
If you omit this, the noise spectrum is given instead.
A zoomable display can help you explore the result at a glance.
The SRS is calculated at each time step in the aperture and can then be plotted to get a time-related signal.
The frequency of the time-related signal can be derived by Fourier analysis.
You can access the SRS at each point in the aperture by specifying a time step.
The time step also determines the bandwidth and frequency step of the resulting spectrum.
The time step and bandwidth can be specified in the command line to the FreeSRS toolbox.
You can also access the SRS with a simple fitting function, since the fast Fourier transform already estimates the SRS in a local region.
The fast Fourier transform of the time-related signal is obtained as a fit function that can be exported to a CSV file.
The FreeSRS toolbox also lets you analyze an SRS using an aperture window.
If the target signal is expected in the aperture window, you can define a window and multiple time steps.
In order to estimate the SRS, an offset will be added to the target signal.
Since the target signal is already filtered, you can specify the offset frequency.
