Acne, contrary to popular belief, does not only affect teenagers. It can also appear later in life. The truth is, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to skincare for acne-prone skin. Finding an acne skincare routine can take it all. From trial and error with a plethora of products to regular visits to the dermatologist and maybe even a complete lifestyle overhaul.
To find a skincare routine for acne that actually works, HealthShots spoke to Karan Bhaskar, skincare expert and consultant, Clinique India.

Handle acne with caution:
- The first step in fighting pimples is to be as gentle as possible. No matter what you apply, do not rub or massage it into your skin. This will make acne worse.
- Applying products to oily, sweaty or tired skin is also a no-go.
- Keep your hands away from your face! Dirt or bacteria from your fingertips are the last thing your skin needs.
- Resist the urge to trap those pesky pimples, even if it seems like the hardest thing to do.
- In addition, be sure to clean it gently. Contrary to popular belief, exfoliating the layers of the skin will not prevent acne breakouts. Using a harsh cleanser can strip the protective barrier, making it more susceptible to dryness and irritation. Instead, make friends with a balanced cleanser.
Well hydrated skin is skin in need
Avoid over drying your skin to combat oil production. If the surface of the skin is too dry and dry, the sebaceous glands may secrete excessive amounts of sebum to compensate, which can worsen acne. Using a lightweight gel moisturizer to keep the skin moisturized will keep it balanced.
Dirty scalp means more acne
You might not think that your scalp has anything to do with facial acne, but it does play an important role. Bhaskar suggests keeping your scalp and skin clean at all times because dandruff and dirt from the scalp can clog the pores on your forehead. Moreover, the use of hair products that contain preservatives or perfumes can aggravate the appearance of pimples, so they should be avoided.
Incorporate an acid into your skincare routine
Bhaskar recommends using an acid to purify your skin. Salicylic acid, kojic acid, and glycolic acid are all excellent treatments for acne. They all help stimulate the growth of new skin cells by removing dead skin cells. Acid can also be used to treat inflammation. However, as with any potent active ingredient, proceed with caution. To avoid dryness and irritation, start with a low concentration and work your way up.
Include these healing ingredients in your acne skin care routine
Apply ingredients like calamine, allantoin, chamomile, hibiscus, or vitamin B3 to the affected skin. As all of these ingredients help the skin heal faster, soothe and calm any inflammation, and provide relief to irritated patches.
