To help us with this, Namrata Reddy, skincare expert and co-founder of Satliva, spoke to HealthShots about the many dangers our skin faces with the seasonal shift. She also shared ways to deal with the effects of the summer heat on the skin.
Here are some skin and hair tips that you should follow in the summer:
1. Use sunscreen
Prolonged exposure to intense sunlight can lead to sunburn. They also have the ability to penetrate the outer layers of the skin and reach the deeper layers, where they can easily destroy and kill skin cells. “Using a sunscreen with ingredients like red raspberries can help you protect your skin from UV rays, and prevent many skin problems like inflammation and acne to name a few,” Reddy says.
2. Leave a few minutes to moisturize
A moisturizer can go a long way to protecting your skin during the summer. Nourishing and treating damaged skin is only the beginning. Try putting your hands on a moisturizer with hemp seed oil. It helps lock in the skin’s natural moisture, and prevents excess sebum production – two essential qualities of a harsh summer.
3. Modify your diet
Consuming the right foods is a must during the summer. Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet. “They contain essential vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants that boost collagen production, reduce inflammation, and protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun,” Reddy adds.
4. Don’t overlook hair care
UVA and UVB rays can damage the outer covering of the hair strand, known as the cuticle, causing dullness and split ends. A simple way to prevent this is to use a hair cream, preferably with nourishing ingredients such as argan oil and peppermint. These ingredients protect your hair from UV damage, moisturize the scalp and boost hair strength.
5. Apply a nourishing shampoo
Most store-bought liquid shampoos contain many chemicals, and upgrading to using a bar of shampoo can prevent a lot of hair damage. Using a shampoo with activated charcoal can help rid your scalp of impurities and strengthen follicles, protecting your skin from the harsh summer sun.
As the scorching summer sun approaches, your skin and hair are first and most vulnerable to damage, and protection and prevention of physical distress and disease is imperative. These five tips will guide you safely and smoothly through the harshest summers!
